epa08858038 An Ethiopian refugee woman from Tigray region at the Um Rakuba refugee camp, the same camp that hosted Ethiopian refugees during the famine in the 1980s, some 80 kilometers from the Ethiopian-Sudan border in Sudan, 30 November 2020 (issued 02 December 2020). According to World Food Programme on 02 December, about 12,000 Ethiopian refugees from Tigray are accomodated in the Um Rakuba camp as over 40,000 Ethiopian refugees fleed to Sudan since the start of fights in the northern Tigray region of Ethiopia. Ethiopia's military intervention comes after Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) forces allegedly attacked an army base on 03 November 2020 sparking weeks of unrest. According to reports on 02 December 2020, UN reached an agreement with Ethiopian government to provide aid for the Tigray region of Ethiopia. EPA/ALA KHEIR

Most of the refugees are women and children fleeing the hunger crisis because of the war which started on 15 April 2023. According to the UNHCR in March 2024, in one year more than 500,00 Sudanese refugees, mainly from Darfur region, have crossed into Chad looking for safety, 90 percent of them are women and children. As different humanitarian crises are unfolding in other parts of the world, both the UN and NGOs like Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) keep appealing for more aid to reach Sudan and avoid a looming famine situation in the already strained socio-economic context of Chad. Most of the refugees are part of the some 800,000 South Sudanese who had previously fled the war in South Sudan and who are now returning to a country with tensions still remaining in many areas, and more than two million internally displaced people. Upon arriving at the Joda border crossing, the refugees head to a transit area set up by UNHCR in the small town of Renk, where various UN agencies assist them with registration, food, health check and logistics. According to the United Nations, some 200,000 people have fled the conflict in Sudan between 15 April and 12 May 2023. Around 40.000 are in South Sudan, and about two million people were internally displaced. Leaving behind them the armed conflict between the Sudanese military and the RSF (Rapid Support Forces) militia which started one month ago today, most of the refugees in South Sudan are South Sudanese returnees, part of the some 800,000 who had previously fled the war in South Sudan and who are now returning to a country which is barely out of conflict itself, with tensions still remaining in many areas.
